Facebook Uses Gadget Vending Machines To Save Lots Of Money

zuck

Facebook CIO Tim Campos is using vending machines that dispense items like keyboards, headphones, and power supplies to employees. It's part of what he calls "frictionless IT."

Employees swipe their ID cards to activate the machine, then help themselves to whatever IT gear they need.

Items are always free, but the retail price is clearly marked as a reminder that it costs the company money.

Campos estimates that the new vending machine system has helped reduce the cost of managing Facebook's replacement accessories by 35%. Check out the video below for more.

GADGET PR0NZS: Inside The Biggest Dork-Fest New York Has Seen In A While

dylan ellis gdgt

GDGT Live was in full swing last night, bringing the coolest and newest tech to New York City.

Dozens of brands were there to show off the latest things they've been working on, and we were there, camera in hand.

Here are the most interesting things we saw.

MakerBots were printing 3D objects all night. This one's making a whistle.

Tweets with the #gdgtny hashtag were projected live during the event.

The HTC Sensation was there, easily the best phone in the house.

Comment on MacBook Air Is My Gadget Of The Year by PRETHOUGHT

Charbox, Are you sadistic? I ran OSX on a mini10v the touch pad had me throwing the thing against a wall. Plus to get half the battery life of an air you had to add the hemoroid battery pack to it which is completely annoying comes off because of the flimsy design. All I can say is you get what you pay for. If you live on a machine for 12 to 16 hours at a time you definely want to go the Cadilac route.

Comment on MacBook Air Is My Gadget Of The Year by Eideard

In fact, we had 3 relatives arrive for the holidays - with 4 notebooks, 2 iphones and an XBox. We have a separate wi-fi network for the guesthouse. They all spend time every day playing with my wife's new 11" MacBook Air. Cost? Well, we didn't buy a Dynex TV at BestBuy either. Though, we did trade-in our second-oldest laptop on the MBA at PowerMax. Try that at WalMart!

And the comment that made this review hogwash: "For other times, I used a 15-inch MacBook Pro." The vision of carrying two laptops to meet all purposes rules out the Macbook Air.

I think you and I have a different idea of what works in terms of technology products. I think if the OS-X on a netbook works for you, great. I like the complete experience and yes I do think it is well priced. Compare it with similar machine from Sony VAIO and you can see the difference.

Mystery Over! Apple TV Is Amazon's No. 12 Best-Selling Gadget (AAPL, AMZN)

Steve Jobs Apple TV

Amazon has quietly updated its best selling electronics list to include several gadgets that were not showing up before, including Apple TV and the Boxee Box.

Apple TV is currently the no. 12 best-selling gadget on Amazon, and the Boxee Box is no. 15.

So now you know. And those are both pretty impressive!

For context: We published a post on Thursday wondering why these devices were not showing up in Amazon's best-selling electronics list, despite seemingly selling well.

Amazon has not responded to multiple requests for explanation, but has apparently fixed whatever problem was preventing these items from being ranked.
