US Federal Government To Prioritize Cloud Solutions Over On-Premise Solutions

The US federal government will soon adopt a "cloud-first" policy, meaning federal agencies will be required to used cloud services "whenever a secure, reliable, cost-effective cloud option exists." The announcement came last week from Jeffrey Zients, the government's first chief performance officer. According to the Washington Post, the new policy is part of a broader government initiative to "fix IT."

The Post quoted Zients saying: "Fixing IT is central to everything we're trying to do across government. IT is our top priority."

Zients also wants to:

• Give programs more flexibility in how they budget for IT projects
• Turn oversight panels into investment review boards
• Establish career paths for program managers
• Bring IT acquisition processes inline with the speed at which technology changes

In other words, he's looking to make government IT projects more cost-effective and agile.

This change in government policy towards cloud computing follows Google suing the federal government for considering only Microsoft tools in purchase plans. Earlier this year Google acquired Federal Information Security Management Act certification, bringing the company's Google Apps for Government service inline with the federal government's information security requirements.

Mystery Over! Apple TV Is Amazon's No. 12 Best-Selling Gadget (AAPL, AMZN)

Amazon has quietly updated its best selling electronics list to include several gadgets that were not showing up before, including Apple TV and the Boxee Box.

Apple TV is currently the no. 12 best-selling gadget on Amazon, and the Boxee Box is no. 15.

So now you know. And those are both pretty impressive!

For context: We published a post on Thursday wondering why these devices were not showing up in Amazon's best-selling electronics list, despite seemingly selling well.

Amazon has not responded to multiple requests for explanation, but has apparently fixed whatever problem was preventing these items from being ranked.

South Korean Cartoonists Cry Foul Over Edgy Simpsons Intro

theodp writes "When asked to animate a dark commentary about labor practices in Asia's cartoon industry — the edgy title sequence for the Simpsons' episode 'MoneyBART' — staff from the South Korean production company Akom raised a rare protest. Even after being toned down, the sequence created by British graffiti artist Banksy depicted a dungeon-like complex where droning Asian animators worked in sweatshops, rats scurried around with human bones, kittens were spliced up into Bart Simpson dolls, and a gaunt unicorn punched holes into DVDs. The satire, Akom founder and president Nelson Shin argued, gave the impression that Asian artists slave away in subpar sweatshops when they actually animate much of The Simpsons every week in high-tech workshops in downtown Seoul. Still, South Korean animators make one-third the salaries of their American counterparts, and Shin declined to comment on the full extent of the work his company has outsourced to SEK, a state-run animation studio of North Korea. Some argue that the Banksy sequence's gray and forlorn atmosphere more accurately depicts the sweatshop-like conditions in North Korea."

Does this infographic show iOS as iPhone only? Because you should count in iPod touches and iPad as well. Those devices buy stuff from AppStore as well, and should count as well. And with them, the graphic looks different.

The "where are they coming from" chart does not show India. Considering the volumes of phones sold there, I would be curious to know whats the Android uptake like. Personally it seems to me a lot of folks are picking up the different Samsung Galaxy flavors.
