Why The Browser Matters, And The Next Wave Of Browser Innovation

Before my partner Marc Andreessen and his friends at the University of Illinois invented the browser in 1993, most people thought only scientists and researchers would use the Internet. The Internet was thought to be too arcane, insecure and slow to meet real business needs. Even after the team introduced Mosaic, the world’s first browser, almost nobody thought the Internet would be significant beyond the scientific community­—least of all the most important technology industry leaders who were busy building proprietary alternatives.

IT'S ALIVE: Google Wave Will Live On As Apache Wave (GOOG)

The Apache Foundation, the non-profit that supports the open source server software Apache, will take Google Wave into its "incubator program," Google announced in a blog post.

Google Wave was that next generation communications platform that was supposed to replace email, but which nobody could understand or use. Google pulled the plug on Wave in August and Wave (and Maps) founder Lars Rasmussen quit the company for Facebook.

Wave is and was always supposed to be open source so this is a natural evolution for the project. It was always going to continue in some way. And who knows -- maybe a hit product will come out of it.

Motorola Splitting To Ride The Android Wave (MOT, GOOG)

Motorola will split into two companies on January 4, 2011: Motorola Mobility will include the mobile phone business, and Motorola Solutions will get everything else.

First announced earlier this month by CEO Greg Brown, the split is meant to help investors capitalize on the sudden rise of Android in the smartphone market. Motorola's Droid phones aren't necessarily the best Android handsets out there--that honor usually goes to HTC--but it's certainly been one of the best selling Android phones. And unlike Samsung and HTC, Motorola isn't splitting its bets among multiple platforms by embracing Windows Phone 7, but is sticking with Android whole hog. 

The division of the company will be accompanied by a reverse stock split, with shareholders getting one Motorola Solutions share for every seven Motorola shares they own today, and one Motorola Mobility share for every eight Motorola shares.

Medialets Rides iAd Wave, Offers Rich Media Tools

Medialets has found that competing against iAd can be a good thing. The company told me its rich media mobile ads have increased 19 times since April, when Apple announced iAd and shined a light on the format. Now the New York start-up is looking to offer its tools to agencies and in-house creative teams to help keep the rich media ad wave going.

Google Wave Creator Quits, Joins Facebook

srimadman found an interview with Wave creator Lars Rasmussen where he talks about his recent decision to join Facebook, leaving Google behind. Apparently getting personally pitched by Zuckerberg helped. He says "I've got a job description of 'come hang out with us for a while and we'll see what happens', which is a pretty exciting thing." The article talks about Big vs Small companies, and notes that about 20% of Facebook's staff are former Googlers.
