Comment on For $55, What Kind of LTE Experience Does MetroPCS Deliver? by tom

i would disagree with the statement from metroPCS about what their customers are looking for. i am quite familiar with the retail environment in both metroPCS and cricket retail stores. high end smartphones(usually flashed(converted) from verizon or sprint) are not only in very high demand(far beyond the supply) plus prepaid customers are easily willing to pay in the $400 - $700 range for used phones. that is something very different from the major carriers. the reality is that metro's leapfroging of 3G means that for now at least customers are unable to use fast data on the phones they can easily obtain(new or used phones flashed from spring or verizon) and are instead limited to either metro's limited 4G selection or using WIFI only for data.

Where does Open Source Software get its Payment from?

It always seems like a question that could have multiple answers. And it is actually true that the question of ‘Who really pays for Open Source Software?’ does not comprise of just one answer, in that there is not just one source of revenue for Open Source. It really is a tough task to track the fund flow for Open Source Software, especially when it is available at zero cost and when it cannot be sold.

As Foursquare gets more into the "socializing" loyalty and providing services to merchants does it need a payments solution?

Answer added in topic Mobile Location Applications.

Bertil Hatt, PhD student in Digital Economics & Independent ...

I'm not sure the “more social” and the “payment” part of the strategy are directly connected:

Offering payment, or rather partnering with one could help FourSquare manage coupons, and be more insightful about the ROI of their service — although, I'm not sure besides from a handful of franchises, most shops need that level of understanding to realise FourSquare is relevant.

The social strategy is most likely more implicit: invisible filtering and friends visibility — warnings and alerts could be implemented, but I doubt there is a not-too invasive way to do it, short of offering to share discounts. You might think that payment could be tied to that (history of with whom you used the discount, to filter the alert) but… I wouldn't think so: it makes some sense, but not enough to demand a co-implementation.

One way to tie the two would be to offer a tool to split bills, but I don't see the decisive point of having LBS for that too: associating your memory of last night with guilt over not pintching in might be useful, but I’d rather have a list of debts somewhere, and recommendations to great places elsewhere and not associate the two.

Many companies are riding the wave of Android's popularity; Sprint as much as any. The company's popular Android smartphones have netted it a record number of subscribers. Barnes & Noble is riding the wave too, as its new NOOKColor is essentially an Android tablet.

So What If Google Does It?

If the Google robocars have taught us anything it's that no industry is immune to the rapidly encroaching search service's clutches. Maps? Done. Mail? Done. Translation? Done. Social? In progress. Is no startup safe from Google's finger in every pot? The folks at WhatIfGoogleDoesIt.com have decided to use crowdsourcing in order to at least give startup founders some verbal ammunition when the inevitable "What if Google does it?" question comes up during a VC pitch or demo.
