Hey, Look: Foursquare Finally Got A Real Office In San Francisco

Foursquare's New York headquarters are pretty awesome. Its satellite office in SF hasn't been.

Foursquare used to share Square's space in the old SF Chronicle building. When Square got too big, Foursquare moved to a small shared room in the basement with a couple of other startups.

This week, Foursquare finally made the move to a real office -- a classic old warehouse south of Market. There are only about 15 full-time employees out in California, but the company is growing fast and wants to recruit more talent from Silicon Valley. And a lot of Californians don't want to move to New York.

Last night the company had a party to celebrate its new location, and we got a tour of the aftermath this morning.

The new space is on one of the small alleys south of Market Street in SF. Supposedly they're named after famous Gold Rush era madams.

Weird -- looks like a garage is here.

The actual office is upstairs.

Office for Mac, Office for PC: Yes, We Can be Friends!

In this Office Show, Dr. Office, aka Doug "Office Casual" Thomas, shows you how Office for Mac 2011 makes compatibility so much better. Docs made on Macs look great on PCs. And vice versa. How To Sync Microsoft Office To Google Docs (GOOG, MSFT)

One thing we love about mobile office apps like Quickoffice is the ability to sync your documents online using services like Google Docs or Dropbox.

Now that feature has come to the most popular office suite in the world, Microsoft Office.

Starting today, anyone with a Google account can download a free plugin called Cloud Connect for Office that will let you sync your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files between your desktop and Google Docs.

The plugin is only available for Windows users. Download it here.

After installing, you'll see a new Google toolbar in your Office applications where you can log in and sync to your Google Docs account.

Office Robots of the Near Future, Gearing Up

Reader jsrodrigues points out Businessweek's article on the predicted coming wave of office robots. These include offerings from Willow Garage, Anybots, and Smart Robots, all designed to automate certain bits of office-building meatspace gruntwork, like ferrying mail and making coffee, but more intelligently and smoothly than previous generations of such tools. Smart Robots has posted a scenario describing the benefits of office life with robots; a test run of robots from that company is set for early 2012 at "a major office building in Manhattan."

Valley VC Firm Accel Partners Opening A New York Office

Accel Partners, the big Silicon Valley venture capital firm, is opening a New York office, the latest sign of West Coast VC interest in the New York tech scene.

Accel has already made several NYC-area investments, so it makes sense to have a satellite office here. Its portfolio includes New York area companies like Diapers.com (recently acquired by Amazon), Etsy, Birchbox, Glam, Squarespace, and Venmo.

Though, for now, this seems more for the convenience of its partners than to add much -- more than its money, via investments -- to the New York tech scene.

Accel VC Rich Wong tells us that the office won't have any permanent staffers at first, but that there is an Accel partner in New York almost every week or two as it is. Accel's Jim Breyer, Theresia Gouw Ranzetta, and Sameer Gandhi are leading the effort. (Breyer also has a home in New York.)

We'll see if Accel eventually hires partners here, gets deeply involved in the community, etc. This stuff takes time, so we'll see.

Wong says Accel will likely increase its investment pace in the New York area, across a range of deal sizes, from seed stage to growth equity.

At the weekend myself and the rest of the Ovi Places team found ourselves re-geolocated from the Nokia office in Invalidenstraße in the Mitte district of Berlin to a new office in Schönhauser Allee in the Prenzlauer Berg district. While the office coffee hasn’t improved, the view from my desk certainly has.

Office for Mac 2011 Update Build 14.0.1 Now Available for Download

A total safari newbie, I wasn't sure what to expect when I packed my duffel bag to head to the bush in Zambia.  So, I tried to have few expectations. Everyone kept asking me what animals I wanted to see, as if it were a menu. I'll take one of everything, please? I was just looking forward to seeing animals that I'd only seen before in a zoo or circus in their natural element.  And, of course, to be in Africa.

On the first truck ride from the airport to camp, I realized why the Abercrombie & Kent tour schedule listed the two-hour ride as a "transfer/game drive."  We had just left the town of Mfuwe and were entering South Luangwa National Park on the way to our camp within the park, Sanctuary Puku Ridge. Just after the sun faded beyond the horizon, our truck rounded a bend and came upon a giraffe in the middle of the road. Our patient guide allowed all of us safari first-timers to have a proper burst of excitement before proceeding forward into the darkening bush. By the time we arrived at our camp, we had spotted even more game....two hippos scampering off in the darkness and the shadowy bulk of a few elephants. Not that I was counting, but I'd already crossed two animals off my Big 5 list. I was already being spoiled by Zambia!
