Adobe Prepares For A Possible Future Without Flash (ADBE, GOOG, AAPL)

shantanu narayen tbi

Give Adobe credit: While it's still trying to make a version of its Flash software that is acceptable for tablets and smartphones, it's also preparing for a digital publishing future that may not revolve around Flash.

Adobe's latest move is to integrate Medialets' advertising platform into its Digital Publishing Suite for iPad and tablet publishers. (Medialets is a mobile/rich media ad startup in New York.)

Medialets' ad technology does not use Flash, but does work on the iPad, Android devices, the forthcoming BlackBerry PlayBook, etc.

While it has taken Adobe a while to make this sort of move, it's ultimately smart. Adobe's core business is selling software tools and services to publishers, whether it's Flash, this Digital Publishing Suite, Photoshop, Omniture analytics, or whatever.

Adobe should aim to support whatever the market dictates, as well as it can, whether it's an Adobe-owned platform or not. And that's what it seems to be doing here.

This new integration with Medialets could help publishers generate ad revenue from their Adobe-produced iPad and tablet content. (It includes Medialets' back-end ad server, not just its multimedia ad creative format. To be fair, that would be useful with or without Flash.)

And that, in turn, should help publishers embrace Adobe tools and services -- and pay lots of money for them -- as opposed to shopping with the competition or building their own.

If this works out, don't be surprised to see Adobe as a potential acquirer for Medialets.

Background: While Adobe's Flash technology is the leader for web video, animation, and rich media advertising, it has not repeated its success on smartphones or tablets. Part of that is because Adobe has failed to make a version of Flash that is good enough to run on smaller devices without eating up half the battery. And part of that is because Apple -- the tablet market leader, and one of the smartphone leaders -- has refused to allow Flash on its devices.

My Web Without Facebook Connect

How important is Facebook? Very, and not in ways you and I realize. Sure you can see status updates and photos of your friends. What really is indispensable about Facbeook -- its ability to glue the web together. I found that out the hardway.

Sorry to hear that Om. Might consider: There is not only the problem of a single point of failure there is also the the problem of to many moving parts. In other words weigh your options carefully. I think there is no one size fits all, but in case of a "public" figure, diversification might be good thing. I think Ken Thompson once pointed out you can not trust your own application if you haven't analysed the compiler code with which your app is generated and that's just the SW site of the picture. Now to rub it in: What does TechCrunch now know we do not know? :-)

I find this Facebook feature powerful too. But your example shows how this crumbles down. But there are many services that provide similar login feature. Twitter, Google, OpenID, Yahoo and I guess there are others. I for some time was thinking on how you can with your site/service tie all those multiple account on other networks to one account on yours. One thing to win from it is as with Facebook to import contacts but I think if used in right way it can be a security and alternative logins feature just for such cases. Like Google allows for same reasons asks for your mobile phone number so that it could send password changes in case of some problems to you directly.

Comment on DOE Chief: U.S. Is in Trouble Without More Energy R&D; by Ucilia Wang

I agree that there is a great need to deploy promising technologies, and the cash grant and loan guarantee programs are helping some of these technologies to reach the mass market. I believe Chu was talking about committing long-term policies to invest in R&D.; He noted that the U.S. is still a leader in innovation, so, like you said, there is an enormous amount of great R&D; going on still. But China is able to move aggressively with demonstration and deployment because it's got long-term plans and money to accelerate R&D; to reach demo/deployment more quickly. To keep up, we, too, need to commit more money, or else we'll be outpaced.

Comment on DOE Chief: U.S. Is in Trouble Without More Energy R&D; by Ed Hands

Energy and food are the keys to the future. Those that control those two items will truly be in charge of their destiny. Chu has hit the nail on the head. I hope our leaders (on both sides) will be able to see through the politics and realize the importance of this to our future.

Kimberly-Clark Debuts Toilet Paper Without a Tube

by Thomas Miner

Today, Kimberly-Clark unveiled its new tube-free line of toilet paper at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores throughout the northeastern U.S., eliminating the cardboard frame that the paper is traditionally wrapped on, saving millions of pounds of paper waste annually.

The company expects that the new line, which will be released under the Scott Naturals brand, will save a significant amount of resources. Kimberly-Clark estimates that the 17 billion toilet paper tubes produced per year in the U.S. alone generate 160 million pounds of waste.

While the company's Scott Naturals line features paper containing 40 percent or more recycled material, the new Tube-Free roll will be the brand's exception, at least for the near future.

Amazon Touts Kindle Sales Numbers Without Sharing Kindle Sales Numbers

Unsurprisingly, the fourth quarter is usually the best sales period for the Kindle (and most retail products), but it looks like this year will be especially strong as more consumers flock to e-books. After announcing a new e-book loan feature last week, Amazon is revealing a number of new Kindle stats today in time for the holiday shopping rush. According to the company, sales of the new generation Kindle devices have already surpassed total Kindle device sales from the holiday season of last year (October through December 2009). Sales of individual Kindle titles are flying off the digital bookshelves. Amazon sold more than three times as many Kindle books in the first nine months of 2010 as in the first nine months of 2009. Amazon also said that Kindle book sales continue to overtake print on Amazon.com. This data is consistent with Q2 and Q1 Kindle numbers Amazon revealed during its earnings call in July. And in the past 30 days, Amazon.com customers purchased more Kindle books than print books, which includes both hardcover and paperback combined, for the top 10, 25, 100, and 1,000 bestselling books on Amazon.com.

Bing and Jay-Z Run a Location-Based Game without Location-Based Service (Black Web 2.0)

It wasn’t too long ago that we saw Jay-Z, Mikhail Prokhorov, and a huge Gowalla logo plastered on the side of a building overlooking Madison Square Garden. Nevermind that New York is home to location-based service Foursquare. Now, Jay-Z is partnering up with Bing to give fans a taste of the rapper’s upcoming book [...]
