Google Geo Developers Blog: Quick And Simple Street View With The Google Street View Image Api

The Google Maps API family includes the Google Static Maps API, which delivers maps as fixed images in PNG, GIF, or JPG format. It’s great when you want to quickly add a map to a page without writing a JavaScript application, when you need maps on a device with no JavaScript support, or for generating lightweight thumbnail maps or maps for printing. In fact we’re so delighted with the popularity of the Static Maps API that today we’re launching an accompanying service for Street View imagery.

The Google Street View Image API brings the simplicity of the Static Maps API to Street View, providing a way to add a Street View image or thumbnail to any application without the need for JavaScript. Simply construct a URL in accordance with the documentation, and the API returns the corresponding Street View panorama as an image in JPG format:

You can use the Street View Image API in both web based and mobile apps, and the size limits and daily quotas match those of the Static Maps API for both the consumer Maps API and Maps API Premier. You can display Street View images in your apps using this API without a corresponding Google map, but if you do choose to display a map it must be provided by Google. For more details on how to use the Street View Image API please refer to the documentation.

To make it easier to find help using the Street View Image API and Static Maps API, we’re also launching a new forum today dedicated to these services. If you have any questions regarding use of these APIs going forward we recommend you head over to the new Google Maps Image APIs group. We look forward to seeing you there!

SCVNGR Goes Global and Becomes the First Service to Use Google's Places API

scvngr_logo_nov10.jpgSCVNGR is a location-based service with apps for the iPhone and Android that wants to add a "game layer on top of the world." Starting today, the company is getting closer to this goal, as it is going international and expanding to about 80 new countries. Until today, SCVNGR was only available in the U.S.

SCVNGR is also switching away from its own proprietary location database. Thanks to its close relationship with Google (SCVNGR is, in part, funded by Google Ventures), the service is the first site to leverage the new Google Places API.

As the company's founder and "Chief Ninja" Seth Priebatsch told us yesterday, switching to the Google Places API allowed SCVNGR to quickly scale globally, as it can now rely on Google's extensive location database to power its service. SCVNGR users will now also be able to create challenges and treks - the central gaming elements on the service - at all of these locations. As we noted when Google first announced it, the Places API "could do for check-ins what Google Maps did for maps." As Priebatsch told us, the fact that Google gave his company access to this comprehensive global database with millions of locations made switching to it a no-brainer.

While SCVNGR plans to launch localized versions of its apps in the future, the interface is currently only available in English. Users can create challenges using their own languages, however.

The service, which launched just 20 weeks ago, currently has about half a million users, though it's not clear how many of these are active users. Priebatsch also told us that the company has managed to double the number of enterprise clients since its official launch to over 1000. SCVNGR clearly has a lot of momentum going for it right now and it will be interesting to see how the service develops now that it is going global.

Everyblock Launches Hyperlocal News Firehose API

Hyperlocal news aggregator Everyblock announced today that it is releasing a firehose API to integrate its data into large partner sites. Everyblock brings together real time and near real-time public records like 911 calls, restaurant health inspections and building permits, as well as news stories and blog posts that discuss user-designated areas in 16 cities around the US. That stream of data will now be available upon request to integrate into the sites of other large publishers and otherwise make use of.

Everyblock was acquired by MSNBC in 2009 and came to my city of Portland, Oregon this Spring. Things haven't been the same since. Give me a Sunday morning and Everyblock on my iPad and I'm a happy guy.

In its announcement today the company emphasized that it offers a customizable lightweight widget, which it says will be most appropriate for most people. The new API is suitable for "partners with heavy-duty needs and who can devote a goodly amount of development time to work with the data."

Competitor Outside.in released the 2.0 version of its API this Summer. Fwix is another hyperlocal news aggregator with an API to check out.

Cashie is launching today as a cloud-based e-commerce platform that can be easily installed on a website or blog. Cashie is designed for publishers using content management platforms such as Wordpress, and can be integrated into a site by copying and pasting a few lines of code. The technology leverages PayPal's X Developer Platform to allow users (who need to have a PayPal Website Payments Pro merchant account) to offer a PayPal and standard credit card checkout experience.
