Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite for Tablets

The recently launched Digital Enterprise Edition from Adobe is “a turnkey set of hosted software services and viewer technologies to create, distribute, monetize and analyze digital magazines, newspapers and publications.” The primary objective of this new edition is to ensure that large publishers can implement a customary tablet-publishing solution without apparently creating any hazards for the existing publishing process and infrastructure. Having said that, another one of this new Digital Publishing Suite’s goals includes enabling publishers to monetize content on a subscription basis via two mediums namely, Apple App Store and Google’s One Pass service for magazine and newspaper publishers.

Comment on For Newspapers, the Future Is Now: Digital Must Be First by Mathew Ingram

Thanks for the comment, Fred. I used to watch Saturday Night Live too :-) In any case, I don't think John Paton would disagree that the Journal Register has not done very well in the past -- but I think his ideas for remaking the company are better than just about anything else I have seen a newspaper chain attempt.

Hype vs. Reality: What digital channels are the most effective in 2010?

There is a lot of hype around new digital channels, but little evidence is published to back this up. So I will. Here is the evidence from one global campaign in 2010 to demonstrate how different digital channels compared.

I hear the questions every week: "Should we start with Facebook or email?" "Should we use Twitter and Mobile?" "Is email obsolete? My first response is always that it depends on the objectives, the strategy and the audience since starting with the tools is putting the "cart before the horse".

A common strategy is to recruit and mobilise large number of people to put public pressure on a person, government or company. In this context, they often want to get people to participate in an online action like signing a petition or sending an email to a target.

So given I had access to a large pool of data for a large global multi-channel campaign I was involved with over the summer of 2010, I decided to try and provide the evidence for the value of each channel.

The Case: 1GOAL Campaign

Over the summer of 2010, I was hired by the 1GOAL campaign to head-up their e-campaigning (starting from building a website). This was a global campaign focusing on ensuring governments committed to achieving universal primary education by 2015 as they had committed 10 years ago in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It was a campaign organised around the FIFA World Cup and had tremendous potential. This potential was because it was endorsed by FIFA, has over 200 world-class footballers as supporters, had other high profile supporters like Shakira, Desmund Tutu and Queen Rania of Jordan as well as having an amazing line-up of support from mobile network providers, broadcasters, large digital sites (Facebook, Twitter, Meetup, MSN), etc.

Our Government Can’t Prevent A Digital 9-11: Entrepreneurs Need To Step In

At the Security Innovation Network (SINET) Showcase at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C., this week, Michael Chertoff, former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, presented a dire assessment of the cyber-security threat facing our nation. He discussed how rogue governments and hackers are quietly infiltrating our computer systems and the disasters that can be perpetuated—like those you see on the TV show “24”. Chertoff worries that these risks haven’t yet gripped the public imagination; that it may take a “digital 9-11” to get businesses, consumers, and governments to fortify their defenses. The most troublesome thing I learned by talking with a who’s who of our nation’s security community was that our government doesn’t believe it has the ability to defend us from the rapidly evolving threats. Yes, the National Security Agency and some branches of government have brilliant computer scientists working for them and can defend their own systems; but the rest of us are our own. The Government simply can’t innovate fast enough to keep pace with the pervasive threats and dynamics of the internet or Silicon Valley’s rapidly changing technologies. Indeed, as George Hoyem, a partner at the CIA-backed venture fund In-Q-Tel, noted, there has been a 571 percent growth in malware since 2006; today, 60 percent of all websites are infected.
